Learn About Different Species
The Species view is designed for new anglers, juniors and families who want to learn what fish they can target and how to catch them safely. Each species profile includes beginner-friendly details such as where the fish lives, the best tackle and rigs to use, recommended baits, feeding behaviour and typical venues where it’s commonly found.
It’s ideal if you’re planning a first session, supporting a junior angler or ticking off a new species. Start in the species library, tap a fish below to open its profile, then click Show recommendations to see suitable tackle and venue suggestions based on your club’s angling matrix.
Combined with the catch report tool and the AI fish & tackle assistant, this helps the next generation of anglers find the right species, use sensible tackle and fish with better welfare in mind.

My Tackle – Find Out What You Can Catch
The My Tackle view helps new anglers understand what they can catch using the gear they already own. Instead of guessing which rod, reel or rig is suitable, you can tick the tackle you have at home and the system will recommend species and venues that match it.
This is perfect for juniors, parents and total beginners who want a simple way to choose the right equipment without overspending. It also supports fish welfare by highlighting tackle that avoids unnecessary stress and promotes better handling for different species.
Tackle categories we use
Most items are grouped into four easy categories:
- Coarse fishing tackle – whips, poles, float rods, feeder rods and light reel setups for roach, perch, bream, tench and carp.
- Sea fishing tackle – beachcasters, pier rods, spinning rods, feathers and ledger rigs for mackerel, bass, cod, rays and flatfish.
- Game fishing tackle – fly rods, fly lines, leaders and flies for trout, salmon and grayling.
- Predator tackle – lure rods, drop-shot rods, jerkbait rods and traces for pike, zander and perch.
Select the tackle you own, click Show recommendations and you’ll see venues and target species grouped by each item. You can then record your catches via the catch report form or ask extra questions through the AI fish & tackle assistant.

Pick a venue near you
Are you new to fishing and want to give it a go, but not sure what tackle you actually need? This view lets you choose a venue or water you can fish near home and then shows you the rods, poles, whips, lines and methods that work best there for the most species. It’s designed for juniors, parents and beginners who want a simple way to match tackle to a real place they can visit.
Select a venue from the list below – for example a canal, river, commercial fishery, pond, lake, reservoir, beach or estuary – and we’ll use your club’s angling matrix to highlight beginner-friendly tackle options. You can then use the recommendations to plan a first session, talk to the tackle shop, or check what you already own at home.

How the Tackle Finder works
This tool helps juniors and beginners pick the right tackle for popular UK species and suggests local venue types where you can catch them. Start from a fish, from your existing tackle, or from a venue, then compare the recommendations with your club coaches or local tackle shop.
