This Week on ClubNest: A Mid-Summer Splash of Angling Action

As we dive into the heart of July, our ClubNest community continues to reel in some fine moments on the water. The week from 6th to 13th July 2026 was packed with engaging matches, insightful coaching, and exciting club events that brought anglers of all ages together. The early summer sun encouraged many to embrace the water's edge, with clubs like Weston Angling Association and The Gambling Angler leading the way in fostering angling skills and community spirit.

With a blend of match fishing, junior coaching, and family-friendly activities, it’s clear that the summer season is when our angling community truly shines. Let’s take a closer look at all the wonderful activity that made this week special.

Match Highlights

The highlight match this week was the Final Evening Knock Up at Weston Angling Association on 13th July. Evening matches have a special charm, with the cooler temperatures often inspiring some of the best fishing action. While the results are yet to be tallied, big congratulations to all participants for making it to this decisive event in the match calendar. The social atmosphere and friendly competition at Weston’s waters surely made for a memorable conclusion to this series. We can only hope for great catches and tight contests as the anglers cast their lines in anticipation of landing a prize-winning fish.

Coaching & Development

Coaching continues to be a vibrant part of the ClubNest scene this week, with two sessions running at The Gambling Angler on 9th July. The morning saw hopeful beginners and improvers tackle the basics of fishing the Bristol Channel, a fantastic way for newcomers to gain confidence in these challenging yet rewarding waters.

Later that day, the focus shifted to the intriguing challenge of Targeting Smoothhounds, a popular species in the Bristol Channel for more experienced anglers. This session attracted one booking, highlighting specialized interests within our community and the value of focused coaching to sharpen these skills. It’s encouraging to see members eager to deepen their knowledge and target different species throughout the season.

Courses Running This Week

The dedication to nurturing future generations couldn’t be clearer, with two ongoing courses supporting junior anglers and feeder fishing enthusiasts alike. At Highbridge Angling Association, the Junior Whip Fishing course kicked off on the 7th of July, with its first session already completed. This hands-on introduction is a brilliant way to get young anglers hooked on the sport, fostering a love and respect for angling that will last a lifetime.

Meanwhile, at Summerhayes Juniors Club, the 5-Week Feeder Fishing Course is well underway, with its second session held on the 8th of July. Feeder fishing is a fantastic technique that combines skill and patience, and this course is an excellent opportunity for attendees to build confidence and improve their catch rates through practical learning and expert guidance.

Club Events

This week also featured some noteworthy club events that brought the community closer together. The Keepnet Ban implemented at Weston Angling Association on 12th July reflects a growing awareness and commitment to sustainable fishing practices. Responsible stewardship of our waterways ensures that the fun and challenge of angling remain available for all future generations.

Additionally, Summerhayes Juniors Club hosted a heartwarming Family Fun Day at Polden Bower School on 11th July. This kind of event is key to making fishing accessible and inclusive, creating joyful experiences not just for anglers but their entire families. We applaud Summerhayes Juniors for their ongoing dedication to community engagement.

Catches of the Week

While no individual catches were specifically reported this week, the focus on targeting species like smoothhounds in coaching and feeder fishing in courses suggests an exciting diversity of species in the water right now. The targeted smoothhound session in particular hints at an abundance of these fascinating cartilaginous fish in the Bristol Channel this summer, adding to the variety and thrill of angling opportunities available.

Trending Species

From the data this week, smoothhounds are certainly in the spotlight, thanks to The Gambling Angler’s focused coaching session. These hardy and elusive fish appeal to many anglers looking for a rewarding challenge beyond the common freshwater species. Besides smoothhounds, feeder fishing practices suggest carp and other coarse species remain popular targets among juniors and seasoned feeders alike.

Looking Ahead: What’s Coming Next Week?

As we move forward into the week of 13th to 20th July 2026, there’s plenty to look forward to across the ClubNest network. The Somerset Youth Angling Club is hosting Junior Match 5 at Tiverton Canal, Devon on 18th July. This event promises to be an exciting test of skill for young anglers, with the canal providing a perfect backdrop for competitive yet friendly angling.

The Gambling Angler continues its commitment to beginners with another Bristol Channel Beginners & Improvers coaching session on 16th July. If you’ve been thinking about improving your saltwater fishing game, this is an excellent chance to book in and learn from seasoned instructors.

Both courses will advance next week as well: the Junior Whip Fishing session at Highbridge on 14th July and the 5-Week Feeder Fishing Course session at Summerhayes Juniors on 15th July. Continuing these developmental paths is vital in keeping our community vibrant and skilled.

Finally, don’t miss the Sasp Booking event at Summerhayes Juniors Club on 16th July, an opportunity to connect, learn, and enjoy the camaraderie that makes our angling clubs warm and welcoming places.
