This Week on ClubNest: 13 Jul – 20 Jul 2026

What a fantastic week it’s been across our angling community! From the peaceful banks of Tiverton Canal to buzzing coaching sessions in Bristol Channel, anglers have been making the most of the mid-summer waters. The summer warmth has encouraged plenty of action, with junior matches and coaching helping to welcome anglers of all ages and skills to the water. Plus, Arctic Char have been stealing the spotlight with multiple catches reported. Let’s dive into the highlights of the week and celebrate some truly inspiring fishing!

Match Highlights

This week saw the eagerly anticipated Junior Match 5 held at Tiverton Canal, Devon, organised by the Somerset Youth Angling Club on 18th July. It’s always inspiring to see the next generation of anglers getting involved, and Tiverton Canal provided a wonderful setting for these young fishers to showcase their skills. Matches like these are a brilliant way to build confidence, enjoy some friendly competition, and foster a lifelong passion for angling. Huge kudos to Somerset Youth Angling Club for nurturing young talent on the water!

Coaching & Development

Coaching continues to be a vital part of our community, and this week the Bristol Channel Beginners & Improvers session at The Gambling Angler took place on 16th July. Despite just one booking, it’s fantastic to see such tailored coaching opportunities available, designed to gently guide anglers of all levels towards improving their skills and enjoying their time on the water even more. Remember, coaching sessions like these are a perfect chance to ask questions, learn new techniques, and fish with support from experienced instructors.

Courses Running This Week

Our clubs are doing a wonderful job keeping angling education alive and well. This week featured sessions in two popular courses:

  • Junior Whip Fishing at Highbridge Angling Association, with sessions running since 7th July and this week’s session held on 14th July.
  • 5-Week Feeder Fishing Course at Summerhayes Juniors Club, ongoing since 1st July, with a session on 15th July.

Both courses are fantastic opportunities for juniors and beginners to develop specialized skills in different fishing styles. It’s encouraging to see clubs investing in structured learning for newcomers and young anglers, fostering growth and passion that will surely benefit the sport in years to come.

Club Events

Community spirit was buzzing at Summerhayes Juniors Club with their “Sasp Booking” event on 16th July. Club events such as these are great ways to bring everyone together, whether for fishing, socialising, or supporting communal water stewardship. These moments of connection add so much value to our angling lives, strengthening ties and building friendships that extend beyond the fishing spot.

Catches of the Week

Arctic Char took centre stage this week, with an impressive four reports of this beautiful species. Notably, one catch weighing 1.200kg was recorded at GSCANARY Water. Arctic Char are a stunning and somewhat elusive species traditionally more associated with colder northern waters, so it's always exciting to hear of successful catches closer to home. Whether you’re chasing these sleek fish or admiring from afar, they are definitely a trending species to keep an eye on this season.

Trending Species

Reflecting on the recent reports, Arctic Char clearly stand out as the species attracting the most attention. With four separate reports, they’re making waves across various waters. This trend highlights the diversity of UK fishing and the thrill of pursuing species that aren’t always the most common everyday catch. Their presence offers a wonderful challenge and a chance to appreciate the diversity of angling opportunities available to our community.

Looking Ahead

Next week promises even more action and learning opportunities:

Be sure to check out these events and sessions — they’re fantastic ways to connect, learn, and enjoy UK angling throughout the summer.
