What a Week on ClubNest: 4th to 11th July 2026
As we settle into the heart of summer, the angling community on ClubNest has once again been buzzing with activity. From competitive matches to coaching sessions and lively club events, it’s been fantastic to see so many anglers of all ages embracing the excellent fishing conditions and community spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned match angler or a junior just starting out, this week has offered plenty of opportunities to cast a line, learn new skills, and make some cherished memories on the water.
Match Highlights
The week featured two great matches that showcased the skill and enthusiasm of our members. On July 5th, Highbridge Angling Association hosted the River Brue Match at Merry Lane. Anglers tackled the flowing waters under what we can only imagine were classic early summer conditions. The River Brue can be quite challenging, so it’s brilliant to see so many competitors taking on the test with great spirit.
Just a day later, Weston Angling Association held their Evening Sweep Match 6 on July 6th. Evening matches like these are perfect for those looking to unwind after a busy day and chase some exciting catches as the light starts to fade. A big congratulations to all who took part, especially with the summer evenings inviting longer sessions on the bank. We’re looking forward to the final knock up match coming next week!
Coaching & Development
It’s fantastic to see coaching activity picking up this week, especially on the beautiful Bristol Channel at The Gambling Angler. Two sessions ran on July 9th: one for Beginners & Improvers in the morning and another targeting Smoothhounds later in the afternoon. These focused sessions are vital in nurturing confidence and technique on the saltwater shorelines. We had one booking for the Smoothhound session, a promising sign that more anglers are eager to target these fascinating species under expert guidance.
Courses Running This Week
Our clubs are clearly committed to growing the sport from the grassroots. A special shout-out to Highbridge Angling Association, who initiated their Junior Whip Fishing course on July 7th. The session attracted eager young anglers ready to hone their skills—a delight to see junior coaching thriving! Complementing this, Summerhayes Juniors Club is well underway with their 5-Week Feeder Fishing Course, which had a session on July 8th. These courses are fantastic ways for younger members to develop their technique and knowledge in a supportive environment.
Club Events
Community spirit was in full swing at Summerhayes Juniors Club with their Family Fun Day held on July 11th at Polden Bower School. Events like this are at the heart of our angling clubs, offering families a wonderful chance to bond, enjoy the great outdoors, and introduce new faces to the joys of fishing. It’s great to see clubs putting so much energy into bringing members together beyond the bank.
Catches of the Week
While specific catch weights and species details are a little quieter this week, the focus on Smoothhound fishing at The Gambling Angler’s coaching sessions hints at a rising interest in targeting these intriguing cartilaginous species. The Bristol Channel, with its rich marine biodiversity, continues to provide exciting opportunities for those looking to expand their catch list beyond traditional freshwater species. We can’t wait to hear about the smoothhound stories and other catches coming in from members engaging in these targeted sessions.
Trending Species
Summer is a fantastic time for bank anglers and sea anglers alike, and this week the spotlight was definitely on Smoothhounds during the focused coaching at The Gambling Angler. With its growing popularity, especially among those attending specialised sessions, it looks set to be one of the trending species this month. As the feeder fishing courses run, species typical to those methods will surely come to the fore too—don’t forget to share your photos and stories on the platform!
Looking Ahead: What’s Coming Next Week?
There’s plenty to look forward to on ClubNest next week. Weston Angling Association’s Final Evening Knock Up on July 13th promises to be a thrilling conclusion to their match series—perfect for anglers wanting to test their mettle in the fading summer light. Then, for the younger generation, the Somerset Youth Angling Club is hosting Junior Match 5 at Tiverton Canal on July 18th, a great chance for kids to gain match experience and have fun on the water.
Coaching sessions continue at The Gambling Angler with another Bristol Channel Beginners & Improvers session on July 16th—ideal if you’re keen to improve your coastal fishing techniques. Highbridge Angling Association will hold the next session of their Junior Whip Fishing course on July 14th, while Summerhayes Juniors host the following session of their 5-Week Feeder Fishing Course on July 15th.
Also not to miss are Weston Angling Association’s Keepnet Ban starting July 12th, reflecting wellbeing initiatives in the sport. Summerhayes Juniors’ Sasp Booking event on July 16th offers more chance for community engagement and fishing opportunities.
